For the 2020 Election Cycle, the Florida Democratic Party (FDP) is taking historic steps to make sure that every eligible Floridian is able to cast a ballot and have that ballot counted. Accordingly, FDP is seeking current first, second and third year law students as well as recent law school graduates for Fellowships with the Voter Protection Department. The Fellowship will train the next generation of voter protection staff and volunteers by deploying law school talent where it is needed most: Florida's 67 counties.

Through this program, Fellows will learn Florida election law and Florida polling place procedures. In preparation for Florida's August 18th Primary, Fellows will learn how to use VoteBuilder and LBJ (Lawyers Bound for Justice) software. Additionally, Fellows will attend virtual talks, meetings and trainings offered by the DNC and other partner organizations that support FDP's efforts to turn Florida blue. Fellows will work with the State and County Voter Protection Teams to learn the most practical methods of running a voter protection program during a presidential campaign cycle.

Fellows will perform a variety of tasks to engage electors and support the work of State and County Voter Protection Teams. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct legal research and fact checking.
  • Answer the State and or County Voter Protection Hotlines.
  • Devise the county's plan to transport voters to the polls and find volunteers to execute it.
  • Develop and implement a system for responding to electors' request for vote by mail ballot pick-up from the county Supervisor of Election Office and recruiting volunteers to also perform this role.
  • Attend Canvassing Board meetings.
  • Serve as a Poll Watcher or Poll Observer.
  • Support the county's ballot chasing effort.

Fellows are charged with conducting at least one voter engagement and volunteer engagement program during their Fellowships.

The Fellowship begins Monday, June 15, 2020. For Fellows who are still students with plans to resume classes this Fall, the Fellowship will end Friday, August 21, 2020. Everyone else, may continue until the end of the 2020 election cycle.
